The group exhibition Metamorphoses will be shown from 24 February – 2 April 2022 at Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein Gallery in Munich during Schmuck 2022, accompanied by a LIVE online presentation. The group show follows an intensive e-Residency including online workshops, individual coaching and group meetings during Autumn/Winter 2021/2022.
Metamorphoses is curated by ZLR Betriebsimperium, alias Christoph Ziegler and Loukia Richards.
Concept:
Metamorphoses, transfigurations, and mutations as mind-opening revelations can be found in many religions, art, and literary traditions. The changes in form and substance, documented by innumerable myths and doctrines, have a common denominator: the ascent of the human being into a higher spiritual sphere.
From Homer and Ovid to Moses’ burning bush or Christ’s Transfiguration, the djinnis of 1001 Nights and Brother Grimm’s folk tales, Goethe’s Faust, Rabbi Loew’s Golem, or the Japanese medieval legends, the message is clear: A sublime power shows its omnipresence through transformation and mutation, and enchants humanity with promise and hope.
Franz Kafka’s famous novel Metamorphosis departs from the spiritual tradition of pre-modernity and ominously foreshadows a society obsessed with order, segregation, and racial hygiene on its way to the war tragedy.
The alchemists expressed humankind’s desire for endless knowledge, wealth, and immortality by seeking to convert waste into gold. Nowadays, upcycling is a common practice. Fashion and luxury brands proudly advertise the pre-used origin of their raw materials. It is ethical and kind, indeed, to recycle; but is it not void of existential meaning? Does it also help us to make contact with something bigger than us, such as nature, humanity, the common good, or even God?
Does contemporary jewelry need to be spiritual? Is the quest for something that stays alive forever just a psychological side effect of mutating Covid-19 or are we being led to our archaic roots by the search for a talisman against fear, disease, and loss?

The show is curated by ZLR Betriebsimperium alias Christoph Ziegler & Loukia Richards.
Goal:
The project Metamorphoses challenges participants to look at the practice of upcycling from a philosophical and spiritual perspective and encourages them to add meaning and context to their work.
Metamorphoses preparatory workshops focus on concept, communication skills, understanding of art and literary traditions, and encourage the dialogue between different art disciplines.
Jewelry, objects (metal, paper, plastic, wood, textile, glass), objets trouvés and readymades, 3D print, and e-waste are the exhibits of the show reflecting the present discourse on nature and environment. Videos created by the participants are presented at the BKV exhibition and the Live online presentation.
The concept of Metamorphoses also applies to the media artists use to highlight their creative procedure: Jewelry, performance, and video.
The project includes:
1. Online workshops on the history and meaning of jewelry and objects, narrative and scriptwriting, rituals and performance, communication, and video.
2. Online individual coaching.
3. Online group coaching.
4. Over a six-week-long exhibition in BKV Munich during Schmuck 2022.
5. Exhibition documentation and social media promotion.
6. Exhibition opening.
7. LIVE online presentation during Schmuck 2022.
8. Exhibition website.
9. Exhibition catalogue.
10. Exhibition advertisement.
11. Sale of participants’ work by BKV staff.
12. Extensive press campaign in German and English.

Participation fee:
To take part in the exhibition, the artist’s participation in the e-Residency is required. A fee is charged for the preparatory workshops, the curatorial work, the communication and documentation of the exhibition.

Requirements:
All works presented in BKV must be new or of recent date and have not been exhibited before.
Artists do not need to be present in Munich during the show.
No previous experience in performance or video scriptwriting or video production is required.
The participants are expected to participate in the workshop program and to be open to new techniques and approaches.

About ZLR Betriebsimperium:
ZLR Betriebsimperium’s approach to applied art and design is interdisciplinary. Its network includes artists, academics, journalists, curators, institutions, collectors. A long experience in media and journalism, exhibition design, art teaching, communication coaching support successful exhibitions, and online presentations. ZLR Betriebsimperium is the publisehr of SMCK Magazine For Independent Artists. Collectors of ZLR Betriebsimperium’s jewelry include Marjan Unger, Grassi Museum Leipzig, Jeroen Redel, Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation, etc.
ZLR Betriebsimperium, alias Loukia Richards and Christoph Ziegler, curated and organized seven Schmuck Week shows between 2015-2021; three of them have been supported and funded by the City of Munich. It designed and curated the jewelry exhibition WERT/voll in Federal Agency of Environment Dessau and Grassi Museum Leipzig in 2019.
Loukia Richards was nominated for the Herbert Hofmann Prize in 2017 and 2020 and for the European Prize of Applied Art in 2018. She shows new work at Galerie Handwerk during Schmuck 2022. Christoph Ziegler has realized art installations for major art institutions, such as Skulpturen Park Berlin, Kunsthalle Hamburg, Kulturreferat Munich.
